hoping for spring
Taken almost a year ago, together with this one. The crocus in the background looks as if it had been painted…
Vor fast einem Jahr gemacht, zusammen mit diesem hier. Der Krokus im Hintergrund sieht aus wie gemalt…

Unidentified flying objects
On the last day of the Lindau meeting we were taken to Mainau Island, where of course I had to visit the butterfly house — a unique opportunity to get up close to some of these beautiful exotic creatures. Thanks to my macro lens, and because the butterflies there are used to people, I could really get some nice pictures:
Am letzten Tag des Lindau-Treffens fuhren wir auf die Insel Mainau, wo ich natürlich das Schmetterlingshaus besichtigen musste — wo sonst käme ich so schnell wieder so nah an solche wunderschönen exotischen Tiere heran? Dank meines Makroobjektivs, und weil die Schmetterlinge dort an Menschen gewöhnt sind, konnte ich tatsächlich ein paar schöne Bilder machen:
However, due to my continuing inability to recognize anything larger than a cell macromolecule,, I don’t know which species these are. And as most of them are not native to this area, not even the bug identification books from my father could help. I think the topmost one is an owl butterfly*, and the one on the bottom might be a red rim**. But the last one? Given the list on the butterfly house page, I’d vote for a scarlet swallowtail, although it doesn’t look all that swallowtaily to me, and other pictures of scarlet swallowtails online are a bit different… If anyone of you knows what this is, I’d be happy to hear it!
* which are called “banana butterflies” in German, because the larvae eat banana
** wrong, both are Heliconius or Postman butterflies, see next post
Leider weiß ich jedoch, aufgrund meiner fortbestehenden Unfähigkeit, biologische Strukturen, die größer als Zellen Makromoleküle sind, zu erkennen nicht, um welche Arten es sich hier handelt. Und weil die meisten von ihnen auch hier nicht heimisch sind, halfen auch die Insektenbestimmungsbücher meines Vaters nicht weiter. Der obere müsste ein Bananenfalter* sein, und der untere ein Biblis hyperia**, aber der mittlere? Nach der Liste auf der Website des Schmetterlingshauses würde ich auf einen Scharlachroten Schwalbenschwanz tippen, auch wenn er eigentlich gar nicht so sehr schwalbenschwänzig aussieht und auch Bilder dieser Art online etwas anders aussehen… Wenn Ihr wisst, was das sein könnte, freue ich mich!
* die auf Englisch “Eulenfalter” heißen, wegen des Augenmusters
** falsch, beide sind Heliconius- oder Passionsblumenfalter, siehe nächster Eintrag

for a change, or a challenge
This would definitely be an unusual color for the journal… ;)
Dies wäre eindeutig eine unübliche Farbe für das Titelblatt der Zeitschrift… ;)

Of forests and trees
Sometimes, you focus so much on a detail that you lose track of the big picture. Not seeing the forest for all the trees. For example, during one of my PhD projects, I was trying so hard to get a particular aspect right that I lost sight of how important (or not) it was for the overall outcome.
Manchmal konzentriert man sich so sehr auf die Details, dass man den Überblick verliert. Vor lauter Bäumen den Wald nicht sehen. Mir ist das beispielsweise während einem meiner Projekte für die Doktorarbeit passiert, in dem ich so sehr an einem bestimmten Aspekt gearbeitet habe, dass ich gar nicht bemerkt habe, wie (un)wichtig dieser Teil für das Gesamtergebnis war.
Yet sometimes, it’s the other way round. Maybe the forest is dark, foggy and cold, and you don’t particularly enjoy being there. But ever now and then you find a detail along the way — a tree, or maybe the occasional penguin — that makes you happy.
Aber manchmal ist es auch umgekehrt. Vielleicht ist der Wald dunkel, neblig und kalt, und man ist gar nicht so gerne dort. Aber ab und zu findet man unterwegs etwas — einen Baum, oder vielleicht auch einen Pinguin — was einen glücklich macht.

almost like a painting
This came straight out of camera. Not that I’m against post-processing, but sometimes I am amazed at the results without any color boosting or such.
Direkt von der Kamera übernommen, ohne Nachbearbeitung — nicht, dass ich dagegen wäre, aber manchmal bin ich schon beeindruckt, was einfach so ohne Farbverstärkung etc. rauskommen kann.
I’ve been wanting to write about my defense, about Lindau, about post-doc applications, but somehow I didn’t find the time. I’ve been really busy — mostly with the latter, as you can probably guess — and it’s all quite exciting at the moment, so I don’t even want to promise I’ll blog more. But I’ll try.
Eigentlich wollte ich über meine Verteidigung schreiben, über Lindau, über Post-doc-Bewerbungen, aber irgendwie hab ich die Zeit dafür nicht gefunden. Viel zu tun — hauptsächlich mit letzterem — und es ist alles ziemlich spannend im Moment, so dass ich gar nicht versprechen will, dass ich mehr bloggen werde. Aber ich werd’s versuchen.
