If you can’t even pinpoint the problem, it’s really hard to do something about it.
Wenn man gar nicht so genau sagen kann, worin das Problem eigentlich besteht, ist es ziemlich schwer, was dagegen zu tun.

Though the state of the world didn’t give much reason to celebrate last week (I find it so weird that things just seems to go on, despite those tragedies), we had cava in the group meeting because of a recently accepted paper. And only after I had had some I was asked to summarize the work for the others… but I think I managed to do it reasonably well nevertheless.
Auch wenn die Welt in der letzten Woche nicht gerade viel Grund zum Feiern bot (ich finde es so eigenartig, dass die Dinge einfach weiterzugehen scheinen, trotz dieser Tragödien) gab es bei unserem letzten group meeting Cava, um einen kürzlich akzeptierten Artikel zu feiern. Und erst, nachdem ich schon was davon getrunken hatte, wurde ich gebeten, die Arbeit doch mal kurz für die anderen zusammenzufassen… Was ich aber trotzdem ganz brauchbar hinbekommen habe.
Lately I have fallen for black-and-white pictures, which feels odd for someone who loves colors as much as I do, but I find that several of my photos simply look better in bw. This particular subject (can you guess what it is?) got completely out of focus as I was exploring the effects of my then-new fisheye optic for the Lensbaby. Quite different in style are the 5 photos of mine that were ranked in the top 500 in the EMBO Journal Cover Contest. Another small thing to celebrate.
In letzter Zeit gefallen mir Schwarzweißbilder immer besser, was etwas seltsam ist für jemanden, der Farben so sehr liebt wie ich. Und doch sehen einige meiner Fotos so einfach besser aus. Hier hatte ich gerade mein (damals neues) Fisheye-Objektiv für das Lensbaby ausprobiert und alles unscharf werden lassen (kann jemand raten, wo ich war?) Ziemlich anders sind dagegen die 5 meiner Bilder, die beim EMBO Journal Cover Contest in die top 500 gekommen sind. Noch ein kleiner Grund zum Feiern.

Immer noch beim Schreiben. Was jetzt noch wichtiger geworden ist. Falls Ihr auch gerade an sowas arbeitet, könnte dieser neue Eintrag von EGF über self-promotion (wozu mir interessanterweise kein deutsches Wort einfällt) interessant sein. Und, je nach Fachgebiet, die neueste Version der Ten Simple Rules.
The picture is the same as before, transformed to black and white. I think I like it better this way. And, because there is another deadline coming up, I will post a few candidates soon — and would be happy about any feedback from you!
Das Bild oben ist das gleiche wie letztes Mal, nur in schwarz-weiß. Ich glaube, so gefällt es mir besser. Und, weil bald noch eine deadline ansteht, werde ich demnächst ein paar Kandidaten zeigen — und freue mich über Eure Kommentare dazu!

writing mode
I’m applying for grants for my post-doc project. And, though it may not be obvious from this blog, I really enjoy writing, so this is quite a pleasant process. Intense writing phases find me sitting cross-legged on the sofa with my laptop even before breakfast (which I would have thought impossible), editing a sentence here or adding a paragraph there.
Zur Zeit bewerbe ich mich für ein Post-Doc-Stipendium. Und, auch wenn es auf diesem Blog vielleicht nicht offensichtlich ist, schreibe ich gern, so dass mir dieser Prozess durchaus Spaß macht. In solchen intensiven Schreibphasen sitze ich schon morgens vor dem Frühstück (was ich nicht für möglich gehalten hätte) mit dem Laptop auf dem Sofa und ändere hier ein paar Wörter oder füge woanders einen Absatz ein.

Quick and dirty? Not quite…
I’m not sure if anything is actually in focus in this picture. The great thing is that it doesn’t matter. I like the colors — they are a bit cold but it was already late in the day — and the fuzziness the lensbaby adds, especially at such small apertures. Perhaps in part I enjoy this so much because it forms a nice contrast to my current project, where I have to check hundreds of details first, while here I just grab the lens, tilt it and see if I like the result (and if not I can throw it away, no harm done). Instant gratification perhaps?
Ich bin nicht sicher, ob irgendwas in diesem Bild scharf ist. Das tolle ist, dass das gar keine Rolle spielt. Ich mag die Farben — sie sind etwas kalt, aber es war schon spät — und die unscharfen Bereiche, die das Lensbaby macht, besonders bei so kleinen Blendenöffnungen. Vielleicht macht mir das teilweise auch deshalb so viel Spaß, weil es einen schönen Kontrast zu meinem aktuellen Projekt bildet, bei dem ich erstmal Hunderte von Details überprüfen muss, während ich hier einfach die Kamera nehme, die Linse verdrehe und schaue, ob mir das Ergebnis gefällt (und wenn nicht, kann ich es einfach löschen, auch kein Problem). Sofortige Belohnung?

Already?
I can’t believe that Christmas is only two weeks away. Usually I am eagerly awaiting the season, but this year I’m not in the mood yet, somehow. While Germany is snow-covered and it was at least suitably cold here for a bit (not cold enough for snow, that’s rare), last weekend the temperatures jumped up 10°C (or almost 20°F), so it doesn’t even feel like winter outside. But the city has finally switched on the Christmas lights (below are those from El Raval this year), and I’ve managed to select a few presents. Maybe I’ll even bake some cookies on the weekend…
Kaum zu glauben, dass es nur noch zwei Wochen bis Weihnachten sind. Normalerweise kann ich es kaum abwarten, aber dieses Jahr ist noch keine Weihnachtsstimmung eingekehrt. Während Deutschland schneebedeckt ist und es hier eine Zeit lang auch immerhin kalt genug war (nicht für Schnee, das ist selten), gingen die Temperaturen letztes Wochenende plötzlich wieder 10°C hoch, so dass es sich noch nicht mal nach Winter anfühlt. Aber inzwischen hat die Stadt die Weihnachtsbeleuchtung eingeschaltet — unten die Lichter aus El Raval — und ich habe es geschafft, ein paar Geschenke auszusuchen. Vielleicht backe ich am Wochenende sogar Kekse…
