the 2012 selection
… and a dandelion, photographed during the day but using flash so that you can’t see any of the background, a seashell cosmos (thanks JF!) and a so-far unidentified pretty violet flower.
… sowie eine Pusteblume, tagsüber mit Blitz aufgenommen, so dass man den Hintergrund fast nicht sieht, eine Schmuckkörbchen-Art (danke JF!) und eine bisher nicht identifizierte hübsche Blume in lila.

slipped
I wouldn’t call it stressed, but I have been quite busy with all the projects I’m trying to juggle. So when the deadline for the EMBO cover contest came, I simply forgot to submit this picture, even though I had spent some time thinking about the description I’d give it — the usual problem being that I have no idea what kind of flower it is. To refer to the rarely used subtitle of this blog, the macromolecules get a lot more of my attention than the macro photographs. Which isn’t a bad thing, not at all, but as I don’t write much about the former here it means there’s little to blog about.
Ich würde es nicht gestresst nennen, aber ich bin doch recht beschäftigt mit den diversen Projekten, die ich gleichzeitig in der Luft zu halten versuche. Als dann die Deadline für den EMBO cover contest näherrückte, habe ich einfach vergessen, untenstehendes Bild mit abzuschicken, obwohl ich eine ganze Weile über die Beschreibung nachgedacht hatte (mit dem üblichen Problem, dass ich nicht weiß, was für eine Blume das eigentlich ist). Um auf den Untertitel des Blogs zu verweisen — den Makromolekülen schenke ich wesentlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit als der Makrofotografie. Was an sich nichts schlechtes ist, überhaupt nicht, aber da ich hier nicht viel über erstere schreibe, gibt es nicht viel neues für den Blog.

Trying to get back into the habit of taking pictures, which somehow fell by the wayside, with all the changes last year.
Also: what a difference a little bit of sunshine can make!
Ich versuche, wieder zum Fotografieren zurückzukommen, was im letzten Jahr bei den ganzen anderen Veränderungen irgendwie untergegangen ist.
Außerdem: was für einen Unterschied ein bisschen Sonnenschein machen kann!

we interrupt the regularly scheduled silence…
… to let you know that I’m still here. Doing well. Happy, actually, just really busy, mostly with work. So much that, when my new yoga magazine came with a title like “calm amidst chaos” I thought that was quite timely. (It’s not all that bad, it just feels like that sometimes when I come home exhausted.)
Wir unterbrechen die reguläre Stille auf diesem Blog, um Euch mitzuteilen, dass ich noch da bin und es mir gut geht, ich nur ganz schön viel zu tun habe. So viel, dass ich, als meine neue Yoga-Zeitschrift kam mit einem Titel a la “Ruhe im Chaos”, das doch sehr passend fand. (Eigentlich ist es gar nicht soo schlimm, es kommt einem nur so vor, wenn man total k.o. nach hause kommt.)

the joys of moving, part X
As you may have deduced from the last photo, we have safely arrived in San Francisco, and have started to explore the new city and the new lab. We’ve also seen far too much of IKEA and made yet more debt payable in blood.
Wie Ihr vielleicht schon auf dem letzten Foto gesehen habt, sind wir gut in San Francisco angekommen und haben begonnen, die neue Stadt und das neue Lab zu erkunden. Außerdem waren wir viel zu oft bei IKEA und haben noch mehr in Blut zahlbare Schulden auf uns genommen.
Our famous boxes have reached the other end of this country, been through a customs inspection, and are now on the way here, where they have to go through customs again (not sure why), and then we’ll see how well they survived the trip. For everyone who was wondering whether they go through the Panama Canal* or all the way around Patagonia — neither, apparently. Instead they travel overland.
Unsere berühmten Kisten sind am anderen Ende des Landes angekommen, wo sie vom Zoll inspiziert wurden. Nun sind sie auf dem Weg hier herüber, wo noch eine Zollkontrolle ansteht (warum zwei, weiß ich nicht) und dann werden wir sehen, wie gut sie die Reise überstanden haben. Für alle, die sich gefragt haben, ob sie durch den Panamakanal* oder um Patagonien herum verschifft würden — weder noch. Über Land.
