  • My coffee of choice in the cafeteria in Barcelona cost 0.72€ when I began my PhD, and 0.95€ when I finished — here it currently is 3.01$. On the other hand, I now have my own milk frother.
  • Our new kitchen is about the same size as the living room — and it has a dishwasher.
  • I have a fancy new computer with a screen that can almost double as a mirror; it can process my usual data in the blink of an eye, and even huge gzipped files in minutes. Awesome. (Yes, I am a geek.)
  • On my first day at work I learned that I won a prestigious post-doc fellowship — can it get much better than that?

  • Ein Kaffee meiner Wahl in der Cafeteria in Barcelona kostete 0.72€, als ich meine Doktorarbeit anfing, und 0.95€ als ich fertig wurde. Hier sind es im Moment 3.01$. Andererseits habe ich jetzt meinen eigenen Milchschäumer.
  • Unsere neue Küche ist etwa genauso groß wie das Wohnzimmer — und enthält eine Spülmaschine.
  • Ich hab einen neuen schicken Computer mit einem Bildschirm, der fast als Spiegel durchgeht, der meine üblichen Daten schneller verarbeitet, als ich gucken kann, und selbst große gepackte Dateien innerhalb von Minuten liest. Wahnsinn. (Ja, ich bin ein Geek.)
  • Am ersten Arbeitstag hab ich herausgefunden, dass ich ein angesehenes Post-Doc Stipendium bekommen hab — viel besser geht’s eigentlich nicht.

    Congratulations on the fellowship! How awesome is that?!

    And if you think you have space there on the trendy Pacific Coast, you should visit the Midwest sometime. There’s room everywhere! :) I’m glad you’re settling in and finding things you love.
